Recent work in Tampa

A few of the jobs we have finished in the last year and a half, with the neighbourhood, the date and what we did.

A dental practice on Kennedy Boulevard repainted over one weekend, reception and six treatment rooms, so the doors opened on Monday with no smell and no downtime.

The practice could not close during the week, so the whole job was planned for one weekend. We measured on the Tuesday, gave a written price the same day and started on the Friday evening as the last patient left.

Reception took a light grey feature wall behind the desk with the rest in white; the corridor, the six treatment rooms and the staff room were painted in a pale blue and white, all in a low-odour Sherwin-Williams interior paint in a scrubbable eggshell. Doors and frames were brushed in white semi-gloss.

We finished Sunday afternoon, moved the furniture back and left the rooms aired. Monday morning the practice opened as normal.

A 1920s wood bungalow with peeling siding and dark rooms, scraped and repainted sage green outside and finished in a bright white inside so the original trim shows.

The bungalow is close to a hundred years old, with the original lap siding and porch columns. Decades of paint had built up outside and was peeling in sheets on the south side; inside, the rooms had been painted a dark green that swallowed the light from the small windows.

Outside, we scraped the siding back to sound paint, primed the bare wood, replaced the caulk along every board end and window, and painted the body in a Sherwin-Williams sage green with the trim, columns and porch ceiling in cream. Inside, the walls went to a bright white in an eggshell finish and we left the original wood window trim and picture rail unpainted, so the house looks its age in the right way.

Eight days in all, exterior first so the interior work was never delayed by rain.

Fifteen Tampa summers had turned the original white stucco chalky and grey, and hairline cracks ran from the corners of the arched porch and most of the windows. The owners wanted the house white again, the way it was when they bought it, and the wrought iron window grilles and front gate back to a clean black.

We pressure cleaned the whole house first, then scraped the failed paint back, patched every crack and caulked around the windows, doors and trim, inside and out where the old kitchen window frame had opened up. The body took two coats of a Sherwin-Williams bright white in a flat finish that suits stucco; the fascia and porch arch were brushed in the same white in satin, and the iron grilles, railings and gate in a black semi-gloss. The clay tile roof was left alone, the way it should be.

The homeowners association needed the colour confirmed before we started even though it was staying white, so we supplied the Sherwin-Williams code and painted a sample patch beside the carport. Five days on site, worked around two afternoon storms.

The house was built in the early 1990s and had not been painted inside since. Every wall was the same builder’s beige, scuffed along the stairs and the hallway, with nail holes where pictures had moved over the years.

Over four days we filled and sanded every wall, primed the stairwell where the old paint had failed, and painted the whole downstairs, the stairwell and the upstairs hallway in a Sherwin-Williams warm white. The baseboards, crown moulding and doors were brushed in a white satin so they read as trim again instead of blending into the walls.

The family stayed home the whole time. We worked two rooms a day, moved the furniture back each evening and walked the house with them on the Friday.
